Karala held her own, and Joliver got some nice moments, which is kind of rare given that he doesn't normally get to do all that much. Doba seemed to have some good points, but then he kind of went crazy. The meeting between Doba and Karala was great.
The rest of the episode was pretty solid, although it didn't feel anything like a finale (which I guess would be down to the fact that the show was canceled, although I'm not sure how early in the process they knew that). Given that Be Invoked exists, I'll wait until I see that before I really decide on anything like that. If there were no movies, this would probably be a pretty infuriating ending, given just how random the final minute or so of the episode seems, and the lack of any real resolution. There's a real sense that everything the team had learned prior to now was evolved and finely tuned for this series, and it's the best production they've made to date. If a person was only ever to watch one Pokemon series, it should definitely be Diamond and Pearl. All of these relationships change, and they're so much fun to watch. Satoshi and Hikari both grow a lot over the course of the series, and so do their rivals. Diamond and Pearl had many such great fights, with the Nozomi vs Naoshi battle in the Grand Festival being another one. The Satoshi vs Melissa gym fight is one of my favorites of the entire franchise. In his place, we have an excellent strategist who trains diligently, plans for his battles, and comes up with elaborate strategies. Gone is the dumb kid from Kanto who lucked his way through every fight.

Satoshi's growth over the course of the series is also great. Yet they take Satoshi and Shinji's relationship in an interesting direction, with their various interactions evolving their relationship as differing styles of trainers, and their final fight is a great, strategic fight which really showcases their differences, but also how they've grown thanks to one another.

He's the asshole who doesn't care about his Pokemon, and Satoshi will have to defeat him and teach Shinji how to be the 'right' kind of Pokemon trainer. At first, you think you have his complete number. After leaving Satoshi with no rival in Advanced Generation, they corrected the course by introducing Shinji right away in Diamond and Pearl. Whereas AG completely dropped the ball on the Aqua/Magma story, Diamond and Pearl developed the Galaxy Gang storyline very well, giving them a few key appearances, fleshing out most of the executives, and then giving us an explosive finale, complete with one of the most shocking moments in the history of the series. They took everything that worked about Advanced Generation (the dual protagonist setup, the maturation of Satoshi as a battler, the contest format, etc) and iterated on it, while also fixing that show's weaknesses, such as the poorly handled Aqua/Magma arc, and the lack of any real rival for Satoshi. In all, Diamond and Pearl was everything a person could ever want from a Pokemon anime. Haruka had to be replaced with Hikari, who although she never reached the same level as Haruka for me, did really come into her own over the course of the series. It had to follow on from Advanced Generation, and especially from the end of that, with the excellent Battle Frontier saga.
Diamond and Pearl had a tough task set ahead of it. Well, what can I say, aside from "Pokemon anime of the forever"? I'll try to find something to say.
All in all, the series wrapped up beautifully, and it was a much better final episode compared to the original series or even Advanced Generation. The usage of Together (even if the Oba/Shirona battle was somewhat out of place) and the final scene between Satoshi and Takeshi were very nice as well. Seeing Hikari waking up in her own bed and appreciating being back home is very nice. Beyond that, it's just nice to see the characters relaxing for a final episode, instead of running around and getting into a lot of battles (although the one final battle between the main trio and the Rocket Gang is a nice moment for everyone involved). There's a sense that this is the last time for many of these moments, but they still work well, and help to lighten things up. Pikachu's glare before he wakes Satoshi up (as well as the act itself, is hilarious, and there are some really nice gags in the episode.
